Sue's passion for competitive sports started with gymnastics at the age of 10. She competed at the top provincial level for eight years and was a Provincial Team Champion member. The level of mind-body fitness she gained allowed her to excel in other sports - Sue competed regularly at the national level in diving, nationally in cross-country running, and at OFSSA in middle and long-distance track and field events. She was also a member of the Ontario women's Netball squad.
At McMaster University, where Sue studied physical and health education, she spent two years competing for the University's gymnastics team. She competed in Track and Field and Country Running during her final two years at McMaster. This is when she started more formalized training in endurance sport. She loves to run; she sees it as a simple form of exercise that she can use to keep in shape for her whole life.
Sue's education and "hands-on" experience have empowered her with an intricate knowledge of how the body responds to training, how the mind deals with competitive pressure and how to put this all together for peak performance. She has worked with many great coacher herself over the years and has gained a huge understanding of the mechanics of movement, the importance of body awareness and how making subtle changes can lead to better performance. She also stresses the importance of specificity of training, injury prevention and treatment and the importance of setting goals - and also having the patience to attain those goals.
Post-University, Sue went on to have 3 children and fell out of her fitness routine. She got back into it 3 1/2 years later and did her first triathlon in 1998. She has gone from wondering if she could complete the whole swim course with freestyle to being 1st in her age group at the World Championships for Olympic Distance Triathlon. Sue has now competed through ten seasons of triathlon and is still in love with the sport. Sue's current goals are to achieve a PB at Olympic Distance worlds in 2008 and move up to 70.3 Half Ironman and Ironman distance races.
Sue has been coaching since she was in high school, where she was coaching multi-sport camps during her 4-month summer break. Since, se has spent almost 20 years in the health and wellness industry working as a fitness instructor, personal trainer and coach. She believes that a good coach must instill confidence into the athlete. She believes in using the sciences of physiology and psychology to put together a balanced training plan, work with the athlete on pre-race strategies, and work together with the athlete to create a training plan that suits the needs of the athlete.
Some of Sue's most recent successes include:
- 1st in age group Nationals 2007 - Olympic Distance
- 1st in age group Vancouver 1/2 Ironman 2007 (7th overall)
- Ontario age group Provincial Sprint Champion 2006 (3rd overall)
