Active Release Technique (ART®) is a soft tissue, movement based, massage technique developed by Dr. Michael Leahy, DC, CCSP to provide therapy to a number of injuries, strains, disorders, joint problems and even reoccurring headaches. If you are suffering from conditions such as...Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Knee and leg pain, hip pain, neck pain, back pain, Sciatica, Shin Splints, Repetitive Strain Injuries, Sports injuries, Golfer’s/Tennis elbow, Rotator Cuff Syndrome, shoulder pain and more- ART® is a system that has been proven successful in treating many of these conditions. Generally, ART® treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. In many cases some of these injuries can be caused by overused muscles from everyday wear and tear, strenuous work conditions and over training. The muscles under stress may begin to change in three ways:
- acute conditions (pulls, tears, collisions, etc),
- accumulation of small tears (micro-trauma)
- not getting enough oxygen (hypoxia).
As a result, these factors can cause your body to produce tough, dense scar tissue in the affected area. This scar tissue binds up and ties down tissues that need to move freely. As scar tissue builds up, muscles become shorter and weaker, tension on tendons can cause tendonitis, and nerves can become trapped causing discomfort-leading to reduced range of motion, loss of strength, feelings of tingling, numbness, weakness and pain.
The ART® provider uses his or her hands and digits to evaluate and treat the texture, tightness and movement of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves. Abnormal tissues are treated by combining precisely directed tension with very specific patient movements and increasing range of motion. These treatment protocols are unique, specific moves allowing providers to identify and correct the specific problems that may be affecting the patient.
Ask your Doctor or practitioner about ART®. Absolute Endurance Training and Therapy consists of highly qualified ART® Specialists who will assess your situation and determine if ART® is the appropriate therapy for you.
